When mounting a park picnic table, park bench, bike rack or commercial grill, there are several mounting options to select from to ensure your item remains stable and secured. This way, you can choose the mounting style that will best accommodate your needs and the needs of those using the space.
Portable Mount
Because portable mounts often have surface mount holes in the limbs of the piece, you can position portable mount furniture on all surfaces. However, if the mounts are not fastened with anchors and bolts, the furniture is moveable.
On the other hand, tubular under-structure furniture does not have mounting holes on the surface. Instead, these pieces have welded discs attached to the under-structure. Anchors and bolts are fastened through these discs, which are placed flat on the ground, to the piece.
Surface Mount
Surface mount furniture typically connects to a concrete area. Most surface mount fixtures, such as metal picnic tables, have holes in the furniture's legs so bolts can attach to anchors, which are implanted into the surrounding concrete. To insert anchors for the bolts, holes are drilled into the concrete surface.
In-Ground Mount
In-ground mounted furniture includes J-bolts, which are attached to the discs or surface mount holes on furniture. While some threads on the bolt remain visible, The J-bolt is inserted into an opening full of concrete with a J hook. The hook's name stems from its shape, which makes it difficult for the piece to be moved. The furniture is secured to the threads visible above the concrete.
However, J-hooks are not used on benches with tubular legs and in-ground mounting. The under-structure of these pieces contain around an extra 18 inches of tubing with a flat bar attached to the bottom. Once a hole is created and filled with concrete, the bench is set in the space until it cures. In-ground mount furniture is suitable for dirt or grass surfaces.
